May 2002, the first Step-2 Classes
in California, USA. All Aluminum 1941 Willys Coupe
I have one picture from each day of Step-2 Class. |
|||
As everybody already are familiar with the technique, they start with their pieces right away.
It is always interesting to watch when new pieces are put together. You can actually see how the car is growing in front of your eyes.
To make sure the shape is right we use templates. We hold them on the outside of the body and check the contour is right.
Here are two of the students from first week, Mickey Galloway, CA and Ron Middaugh AZ. The third student Randy Coverstone, CA had to leave little early and are missing in the picture.

In the days between the Classes Lazze and I prepaired for the next week. We don´t make any pieces, just put them together.
New students, new pieces. Here they have started making the roof.
Second day and it was time to put the roof in. It takes a great deal of time just to trim it in place.
Here they have made some pieces for the rear fenders, and it was time to start putting them together.
The students have worked so fast, we almost run out of parts to make. Here they start making pieces for the front fenders... Due to the higher (than expected) speed in producing the pieces for the Willys. We now know there will only be a total of 4 weeks of Aluminum Willys Step-2 Class.
This is how far the students got in 2 Weeks of Step-2 Class.
There is no doubt about what kind of car this is going to become...
|
||||
After the summer, in September 2002, it was time for another
session of Step-2 Classes. We thought it should had taken at least 4 weeks to build an
Aluminum Willys Coupe body. There was just enough parts left for one more week... The front end and trunk lid. |
||||
Measuring is very important for a good result. We put tapes over every place to keep track of them.
Day 3 and things start coming in place. The neighbors followed the buildup with great interest. No problem at all...
Once we had the lift in place, it was much easier for the students to have a good working position.
Trunk lid was last on the menu. Much harder work to do then it seems to at the first thought.
All pieces are done to the Willys body, the front and hood
still need to be welded together. All in all - 3 weeks (3 different classes = 15 days) 3
students in each class, was all it took to make the first ever All Aluminum 1941 Willys
Coupe in USA. This was FUN !!! |
